Genre - Dark fantasy, Horror fiction, Thriller. A dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. The manga landed in the hands of horror fans on September 8, 2011, and ended 3 years later on September 18th. Soon after the final 14th volume of the manga, Tokyo Ghoul was adapted into a 12 episode anime series which aired on 3rd July 2014.

The story is based In an alternate reality, the city of Tokyo becomes the battleground between humans and vampire-like creatures called ghouls, whose primary source of nutrients come from consuming humans. The main story follows the life of Kaneki Ken, the introverted teen university student who happens to find himself awoken as one of the ghouls he dreaded to be. All began from a simple meeting with a girl who caught the interest of Kaneki, turns out this girl was one of the most feared ghouls in the city. Tokyo Ghoul is overall a visually intense manga, from the gritty art style that invokes the emotions out of the reader to the intense illustrations that create a heavy atmosphere filled with anxiety. Ishida Sui is truly a genius for capturing the true emotion in his thrilling yet tragic story of Kaneki Ken.

Personally i would recommend reading the manga over watching the actual series itself as the manga captures the true essence of Kaneki Ken’s life as a ghoul and the fight scenes are way more thrilling and dramatic than the poor animation which has been done of the series. However, though it is a whole new experience to watch and read this series altogether and it is definitely recommended for the ones who love psychological horror mangas and anime.
